Why we dream is still one of the behavioral sciences' greatest unanswered questions
This morning I woke up and could not remember my dream which bothered me a lot because I knew I was dreaming about something nice so I grabbed my laptop immediately and started searching about dreams just to find out if there any ways to restore the deleted dreams lol jk .Things which I'm sharing here are incredible and worth reading. Here is what I found ..
Dreams sometimes leave you numb for a day and sometimes you have no idea what you dream about. You can really live a whole beautiful life in a dream that you may never be able to achieve in reality. An average human being spends 6 whole years of his/her life dreaming.
..Dreams are so weird that we don't even need eyes to see them...
Eyes don't matter
Blind people can dream. People who became blind after birth can see images in their dreams and those who were born blind dream as vividly, however, instead of seeing images, they use their other senses such as smell, sound, touch etc. to dream.
Symbolic language
You sometimes have the strangest of dreams - some scary, some worrisome and the rest absolutely angelic. Remember, these are all symbols for something or the other. There's nothing strange about these dreams because they are only talking in a symbolic language like poems.
Diversity
On an average, you can dream for about one to two hours every night and you can have four to seven different dreams in one night.
Daydreaming IS a thing
Psychologists say that daydreaming is actually what occurs if your dream has been carried forward, it is basically related to what you dreamt about when you were fast asleep. They also involve different mental processes.
Dreamy inventions
Despite what we saw in point 3 about forgetting your dreams, it is true that many inventions were born in dreams. Newton, Graham Bell and even some poets drew their inspiration through their dreams. How they do that is, they write their dreams down as soon as they wake up from their sleep in order to remember and work on it.
Dream Master
The good part is that you can often control your dreams. You can manipulate, twist and turn the beginning and the ending of your dreams like it's a movie being shot in front of you. It is called the "Lucid dreaming" (one is aware that he/she is dreaming) phase.
Gender Differences
Men and women dream differently, unlike women who tend to dream more pleasant and peaceful subjects, men dream more aggressively with violence and socially complex subjects. Men tend to dream about other men 70% of the time, whereas women dream about men and women equally.
..and the list goes on ..but WHY? Why do we dream at all?
There are many theories about why we dream, but no one knows for sure. Some researchers say dreams have no purpose or meaning and are nonsensical activities of the sleeping brain. Others say dreams are necessary for mental, emotional, and physical health.
In one study, researchers woke subjects just as they were drifting off into REM sleep. They found that those who were not allowed to dream experienced:
- Increased tension
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Difficulty concentrating
- Lack of coordination
- Weight gain
- Tendency to hallucinate
Many experts say that dreams exist to:
- Help solve problems in our lives
- Incorporate memories
- Process emotions
If you go to bed with a troubling thought, you may wake with a solution, or at least feel better about the situation.
Sigmund Freud believed dreams are a window into our subconscious. He believed they reveal a person's:
- Unconscious desires
- Thoughts
- Motivations
Freud thought dreams were a way for people to satisfy urges and desires that were unacceptable to society.
Some dreams may help our brains process our thoughts and the events of the day. Others may just be the result of normal brain activity and mean very little, if anything. Researchers are still trying to figure out exactly why we dream.
But.. what if our whole life is a dream?
